Martin Short RUINS Selena Gomez's Wedding Cake! (Hilarious Story) (2026)

Martin Short may not be the kind of wedding guest you would expect. The beloved actor, now 75, shared a humorous and slightly embarrassing story during his appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on January 21. He revealed that he inadvertently took a slice out of Selena Gomez's wedding cake before it was even cut for the guests to enjoy.

Short, who stars alongside Gomez in the hit series "Only Murders in the Building," affectionately regards her as "an extra child of mine." He expressed immense joy at being part of her special day as she married producer Benny Blanco. "I adore her so much, and she found this guy, and he’s the greatest guy," Short shared with enthusiasm. "They have the greatest hang and they're wildly in love. So the wedding was perfect and it was beautiful."

Referring to the lavish celebration, Short said, "It was a big, big party," highlighting the star-studded guest list that included many familiar faces from the entertainment industry. He painted a vivid picture of the event, describing a stunning setup featuring a stage, dance floor, musicians, and grand tents. He elaborated, "At the back of the tent were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs."

As luck would have it, Short was seated next to fellow cast member Steve Martin and comedian Paul Rudd. After enjoying a few drinks, he assumed there would be separate cakes for each group of guests. When Martin, preparing to leave, mentioned he had yet to try any wedding cake, Short jokingly urged him, "Oh Steve, you can't leave yet without a piece of wedding cake."

In what can only be described as a moment of mischief—or perhaps confusion—Short took it upon himself to cut into the wedding cake, first slicing one side and then the other. It was at this point that the people in their group erupted in unison, shouting, "Marty!" Short later realized he had mistakenly hacked into the very wedding cake meant for the couple's big reveal.

Attempting to salvage the situation, he awkwardly tried to repair the cake with a fork, but his efforts were in vain; the cake still looked quite the worse for wear. "This was bad," he admitted, noting the mishap occurred just an hour before the cake was scheduled to be presented to the guests. "It ended up being very much like a Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful but now it had had a little work done."

The union of Gomez and Blanco took place on September 29 in Santa Barbara, California, and was marked by elegance. Images from the ceremony captured Blanco in a classic black tuxedo accented with a bow tie, while Gomez looked radiant in a custom-made white halter-style gown complete with a ruffled neckline and sweeping skirt, both designed by Ralph Lauren. The photos also showcased her stunning lily of the valley bouquet, wedding bands, and exquisite diamond-and-platinum drop earrings from Tiffany & Co.

The lightheartedness of Short's tale brings a smile, but it also raises interesting questions about etiquette at weddings. Do you think there should be more leniency when it comes to enjoying wedding festivities? Or should guests always adhere strictly to the program? Share your thoughts below!
